1865 - (Civil War) Battle of Goldsborough, North Carolina, Ends
The Battle of Goldsborough came to an end in North Carolina. The 21st, 22nd and 25th Wisconsin Infantry regiments took part as three Union armies totaling 100,000 men captured the city and its railroad facilities. These were then used to supply troops moving north toward Virginia. Union forces occupied Goldsborough until April 10, 1865, the day after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia.
1918 - Governor Patrick Lucey Born
On this date Wisconsin governor Patrick Joseph Lucey was born in La Crosse. Lucey attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul and the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his Bachelor of the Arts degree. After serving in the Army during World War II, Lucey became the executive director and state chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. In 1948 he was elected to the state assembly and in 1964 was elected lieutenant governor. Lucey served as governor of Wisconsin from 1970 until he resigned in 1977 to serve as the United States Ambassador to Mexico. [Source: First Ladies of Wisconsin, The Governors' Wives by Nancy G.
