Interview with Tom Weso, Author of Good Seeds

“These stories and recipes make us appreciate the past, make us long for woods and waters today, and make us just plain hungry.” —Heid E. Erdrich

In Good Seeds: A Menominee Indian Food Memoir, Tom Weso takes readers on a cook’s journey through Wisconsin’s northern woods. He places each food in its traditional harvest season and connects recipes—for beaver, trout, blackberry, wild rice, maple sugar, partridge—with the family members and neighbors who taught him Indigenous values. In this interview, Weso shares what inspired him to document his Menominee stories and food traditions—and reveals the secret ingredient in northern chili recipes!
